Very rare and striking 16th century map of the world in Mercator projection. Filled with finely engraved classic features of the time: several mythical islands off Greenland's southern tip, ‘Beach' is named in the huge southern continent, western bulge of South America, Quivira located in the unknown northwest of North America, and numerous other engaging features. Sea monsters swim the seas, including a large fierce one in the Pacific. Decorative cartouche. Published in Jose de Acosta's De Natura Nova Orbis, first published in Salamanca in 1588. Nice margins, only faint age toning. Single fold as issued. German text on verso.  Published in Cologne.
